Being Human in the Digital Age

In a rapidly changing world, digital transformation along with innovation is increasing exponentially. We are in a digital economy and are experiencing the digital age, and the fourth industrial revolution. These changes are all having an immense impact and changing the nature of the physical working world. In terms of digital transformation, increasing investments are being made to ensure higher productivity and return on investment. Digital transformation includes:

Problem

As the levels of these digital developments increase exponentially over the next few years, the way we are currently working, we may be unwittingly turning human beings into robots, which is having a knock-on effect to all areas of work and home life.

This has been exacerbated by the pandemic and other world events, with remote working, increased isolation, bereavement, lack of connection, lack of travel, and increased demand for attention to perform and succeed from all angles of work, our personal lives and from social media.

This has resulted in individuals experiencing stress, pressure, anxiety, mental fatigue, mental health and emotional issues, trauma, depression, lack of happiness and fulfilment in both work, home life and reduced physical fitness which then has a knock-on effect to productivity and output in the workplace.

Solution

We must ensure that the human element of work and life is also being invested in and enhanced. 95% of traditional, organisational development focuses on trying to make leaders and managers more productive through training that is focused on the physical and intellectual aspects of business. The tasks, the processes, the strategies and the ‘job’, in other words, ‘human doing.’

But the reason this does not always work, is because it does not support the whole ‘human being’. With the increasing drive for meaning and engagement, today’s leading organisations are realising that to be successful, they must acknowledge, support and develop their employees by applying a multi-dimensional, integrated approach.

We must focus on developing the human experience and it is time for this to come the forefront in terms of health and wellbeing. We must create solutions to increase human transformation so that by being in the best condition we can be, means we are in our optimum mental, emotional and physical health and wellbeing. When we feel human, supported and feel respected, we have headspace to be innovative and creative in the workplace, rather than reactive, which ultimately increases productivity and fulfilment, and reduces unwanted employee attrition.
